Google rolls out Call for Me, letting Gemini make phone calls for Pixel 11 users
Google began rolling out "Call for Me" on September 24, 2026, a feature that lets Gemini place a phone call on a user's behalf and carry the conversation through to completion rather than just dialing a number or reading a script. The early preview is limited to Pixel 11 owners in the US who pay for a Gemini subscription and are running the beta version of Google's Phone app for Android.
What's new
Once a user tells Gemini what they need, "the AI can call a business and introduce itself, navigate automated phone menus, wait on hold, and then handle the conversation on the other end." Google positions the feature for concrete, bounded tasks: checking whether a product is in stock, booking a restaurant reservation, rescheduling an appointment, or placing an item on hold.
The call goes out from the user's own phone number and is dialed directly from their device, not routed through a separate Google number. During the call, the user can watch a live transcript as the conversation happens and take over at any point if they'd rather finish the call themselves. Google also says the feature includes real-time scam detection that flags when the person on the other end of the line may be running a scam. Gemini is allowed to share personal information the user has approved for a given call, which Google says lets it handle a broader range of requests than earlier calling tools could. It draws the line at certain categories: Call for Me cannot dial emergency services, complete financial transactions, or make telemarketing calls.
Context
This is not Google's first attempt at AI-driven phone calls. Google Assistant demonstrated a similar concept at I/O years ago, booking a salon appointment live on stage. More recently, Google shipped "Ask for Me," which let Gemini call businesses to ask about pricing or availability, and Pixel phones have separately offered "Hold for Me," "Talk to a Live Rep," and "Direct My Call" for navigating phone trees and hold queues. Call for Me is a step beyond those: it is meant to complete a task end to end, including exchanging approved personal details, rather than just gathering information or skipping the wait.
Why it matters
Competing agents from other companies, including Meta's Muse and Instinct, have also started making calls on a user's behalf, and Google's launch puts Gemini squarely in that same race for who gets to be the AI system standing between a person and a phone tree. The deliberately narrow rollout, one phone model, one country, a paid tier, and a beta app, signals Google is treating live two-way phone conversation as higher-risk than most Gemini features it ships broadly on day one. Google's own reasoning for the small-scale start, that "real-world conversations are nuanced," points to the harder problem underneath: a model that can misread a hold-queue prompt or mishandle a merchant's questions is now doing so with the user's real phone number and approved personal information already in play, not in a sandboxed chat window.
